The Power of Paper

Etching of three Belted Galloway cattle by Richard Foster

Given that my prints are almost entirely printed with variations of black ink, the paper on which the images are printed becomes incredibly important. Many of the prints rely on the whiteness of the paper to become a central part of the image. “White Stripe” is a good example of this approach. The image features three Belted Galloway cattle, famed for the strip of white around their bellies, while the rest of the animal is jet black. In the print, this distinctive belt is suggested by nothing more than white paper but because of how this area is surrounded by darker mark-making, the animals belt appears rounded and having mass.
