Exploring Lakeland Islands

Drypoint etching of a Lake District holme or island

Over the winter I spent a good deal of time exploring and sketching the small islands or islets that dot many of the lakes in Cumbria. Known as “holmes” they often have names they reflect their original use; so Hen Holme in Windermere was once the place where hens were reared, kept safe from hungry foxes. I love the how the holmes are made up of bare rock and covered in stunted trees and sparse vegetation. They feel isolated and lonely and I have tired to reflect this character in the prints I am developing, based on my sketching and photography.

I hope to display a series of these holme prints at the Lake Artists Summer Exhibition, which opens in late July, in Grasmere
